Google Wallet Is Dropping PayPal Accounts Like A Bad Habit

PayPal has expanded to become a go-to payment and money storage platform for many people. This is why the ability to use your PayPal account via Google Wallet was very welcome. However, all good things must come to an end. Google Wallet will end its PayPal account integration soon in the U.S.

In case you don’t know, you could directly link your PayPal accounts to Google Wallet. This basically made your PayPal account function like any other debit card on your Google Wallet. It eliminated the need to get a PayPal-branded MasterCard. So, if you didn’t have a PayPal card, you would simply log in using your email address and password.

However, Google Wallet will end its PayPal account integration

This news comes to us directly from Google. The Google Wallet help page dedicated to adding PayPal accounts states that the integration will end soon. On June 13th, if your PayPal account has been linked to Google Wallet, it will be automatically unlinked. So, you have just under two weeks to use your PayPal account. The writing has been on the wall for about a month, as a support page announced that Google Wallet stopped letting people link their accounts on April 11th.

Why is this happening?

Neither Google nor PayPal gave an answer to this question. However, we can connect the dots. Recently, the PayPal app for Android and iOS started allowing contactless payments in Germany. Since the PayPal app natively supports contactless payments, there’s no immediate need for it to be compatible with Google Wallet.

That’s only speculation at this point, as the PayPal app does not allow contactless payments in the U.S. Also, Google Wallet will not discontinue PayPal account support in Germany. So, this adds a layer of confusion to the story. Germany is the market where the PayPal app supports contactless payments, yet Google Wallet still supports PayPal account integration. There are still many unanswered questions.

However, there is a silver lining

Google Wallet is not dropping support for PayPal altogether. It is only dropping support for linking your account. However, if you have a PayPal-branded debit card, you can still add it to Google Wallet and use it for contactless payments. So, you may want to order a PayPal card as soon as you can if you want to continue using your PayPal account through Google Wallet.
