Google TV Streamer Not Coming To Certain Regions, Chromecast May Remain Available

The launch of the Google TV Streamer last year brought with it the end of the Chromecast. But in some regions, the Google TV Streamer isn’t coming, and its predecessor may stick around.

Google announced in August that it would end production of new Chromecast with Google TV devices, both the HD-only and 4K models. Once existing stock runs out (which has been happening quickly), the product will not be replenished, the company said, as the Google TV Streamer would take its place.

The Streamer, though, is not available in all areas.

Google TV Streamer is currently sold in 19 countries (as detailed on a support page), and it seems an expansion isn’t on the date. Speaking to Android Authority, Google says that the Streamer won’t be coming to certain new markets including India, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, and other parts of the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

One reason for this, Google’s VP of Devices and Services for APAC Mike Abary hints, appears to be the abundance of low-cost TVs with built-in streaming capabilities in those regions. While TVs with streaming services built-in are prolific globally at this point, Android TV OS has been particularly popular in these regions, having over 50% market share in 2022, which could further lessen the incentive for Google to offer a high-end streaming device of its own.

But, apparently, Google has “no immediate plans to discontinue” the Chromecast in these regions. It’s unclear if this means the company is looking to continue making new stock available, though. The Google Store in some of these countries – including Singapore and India – no longer sells the Chromecast, so buyers would have to rely on third-party retailers. Flipkart, for example, does still offer Chromecast with Google TV.
