Alongside the initial reveal of Google TV’s Android 16 update, Google is also announcing some changes to apps for TVs, which include new pop-ups that will ask you for app ratings.
It’s not uncommon for mobile apps to show a quick pop-up that asks you to rate that app in your mobile store. Google has supported this with Android apps and the Play Store for quite some time, and is now looking to expand the option over to Android TV OS and Google TV apps.
As a part of its I/O 2025 announcements for TVs, Google revealed that apps on Google TV will be able to ask users for a review through a pop-up. This pop-up will allow the user to leave a star rating using their remote, or send a prompt to their phone which can then complete the app rating, more easily allowing for text to be added to the review.
Google says:
Moreover, app ratings and reviews are essential for developers, offering quantitative and qualitative feedback on user experiences. Now, we’re extending the In-App Ratings and Reviews API to TV to allow developers to prompt users for ratings and reviews directly from Google TV.
Notably, this is a feature app developers need to implement, so you won’t see it everywhere. Google is also making it possible for users to see app ratings through the Play Store on Google TV, as well as leave reviews through that listing.
