Google Switches Providers For Pixel Preferred Care Warranty, Brings Back 2-Year Plans

Google is rolling out 2-year extended warranty plans for Pixel phones, where Preferred Care was previously only available on a monthly basis.

Preferred Care is essentially Google’s version of “Apple Care” for Pixel products, with the extended warranty offering users longer coverage for defects and breakdowns, as well as subsidized costs for repairs of accidental damage such as screen and battery replacements.

For Pixel phones, Google offers Preferred Care with monthly billing, ranging from $8/month to $15/month on the latest Pixel 9 series. However, select devices have also had 2-year plans available. As of February 24, 2025, Google is widely expanding 2-year Preferred Care plans to all of its Pixel devices, including phones.

In an updated support page (via Android Authority), Google details 2-year Preferred Care plans for Pixel devices, noting that these “one-time payment” plans are now available for “eligible devices purchased from the Google Store or a retail partner.” Previously, this same page said that 2-year plans were only available to select Fitbit devices.

Notably, though, Google did offer these 2-year plans when the Pixel 9 series first launched. We referenced the costs in our Pixel 9 Pro Fold review, and an archived page shows the option in August 2024, but was removed not long after. A Wayback Machine archive of the Pixel 9 Pro’s listing shows that, as of January 23, only monthly coverage was available. As of today, 2-year coverage is available during checkout. Google also started testing these 2-year plans in the UK and Japan in July 2024.

With these new plans, Google has also switched from Assurant, which was the provider prior to February 24, 2025, to Asurion, which will be the new provider going forward. The change kicks in based on your shipping date. Any device shipped prior to 2/24/2025 will use the prior terms and provider, and may not have a 2-year plan available.
