Google Supercharges Gmail Replies With Context-Aware AI

If you’ve ever had to reply to an email in Gmail, using smart replies is a good way if the email does not require a longer response. But what if it did? Well, the good news is that at I/O 2025, Google is giving Gmail smart replies a bit of AI help from Gemini, turning smart replies into even smarter replies.
For those unfamiliar with Gmail’s smart replies, it gives users the option of replying to an email with short phrases like, “Thanks!” or “Sounds good!”. It’s quick and easy, perfect if you’re looking to acknowledge the sender. However, it stops being as helpful if the email is longer and requires a more detailed and thoughtful response.
This is where Gemini steps in. According to Google, “By pulling from your past emails and Google Drive, Gemini provides response suggestions with specific details that are more relevant and on point, eliminating the need to dig through your inbox and files yourself. Crucially, it also adapts to your typical tone — whether crisp and formal or warm and conversational — so your replies sound authentically like you.”
You can actually check it out in the demo video above, and it’s pretty cool. Will this be perfect? That remains to be seen. But assuming the demo Google shared at its I/O event is any indication, it feels borderline magical. We would recommend that you double-check the contents first, especially since AI is known to get things wrong sometimes.
Other Gmail updates
In addition to giving Gmail smart replies a Gemini boost, Google has also announced other updates it’s making to the email platform that are also powered by Gemini. This includes cleaning up your inbox. According to Google, “Simply tell Gemini what you want to do (e.g., ‘Delete all of my unread emails from The Groomed Paw from last year’) and watch as it helps you manage and declutter your inbox with a single click.”
There’s also a new way of quickly scheduling an appointment in Gmail. Google says that Gemini will detect when you’re trying to set up a meeting. It will then give users options to share their booking page right within Gmail itself. This will cut down the time spent going back and forth between calendars.
These features aren’t live yet. Google says the quick scheduling and inbox cleanup will be generally available next quarter. Gmail smart replies will arrive later this year.
