One of Android 16’s new features is “Live Updates” and we’re finally getting a peak into how they’ll work for apps like Google Maps and Uber Eats, but we might also be waiting longer than expected to start using them.

During the I/O Developer Keynote, Google briefly touched on Live Updates in Android 16, noting what they’re used for and showing previews of what they’ll look like in Google Maps, Waymo One, and Uber Eats. Like “Live Activities” on iOS, the status of something is shown with a progress bar and some other details.

Google shows how this works on a Pixel, a Galaxy S25 Ultra, and also on an Oppo device that can easily be mistaken for an iPhone thanks to its blatantly similar lockscreen design.

In a blog post, Google offers a closer look at its on-stage demos.

Interestingly, though, Google is implying that we’re a ways out from this functionality actually debuting – it’s not live in the first QPR1 beta. In the post mentioned above, Google says Live Updates will be “available soon,” and says on stage that they’ll be “rolling out to devices over the next year.”

In Android 16 we added a new feature, Live Updates. They allow you to show time-sensitive updates for navigation, deliveries, or rideshares by using the new progress style template, rolling out to devices over the next year.

App updates are likely a major point that will slow this rollout down, but it’s interesting to hear that it could take several months.
