Google Promotes New Gemini Live, AI Features Coming To Pixel 9

There was a big Google presence at the Galaxy S25 launch event this morning. Google is now specifically telling Pixel 9 owners (and prospective buyers) about what new Gemini AI features they are set to get.

A banner on store.google.com today announces “New Gemini Live and Circle to Search features on Pixel 9 phones.”

Gemini Live’s new ability to “talk you through the images, files, and videos you see on Pixel” is the main highlight. Specifically:

  • Images: Add an image to your conversation and Gemini Live can provide detailed information and suggestions, or help solve problems in real time.
  • Files: Share documents with Gemini Live, then have a discussion about them.
  • Videos: Have a conversation about a YouTube video, including insights, explanations, and reasoning.

From the redesigned Gemini overlay — which Google did not talk about today, you can take a new picture or add an existing one to your gallery from the ‘plus’ menu. There’s also “Ask about screen” to screenshot your current display, “Ask about PDF” when in Files by Google, and “Ask about video” in YouTube.

Once uploaded, you’ll see a “Talk Live about this” button just above the overlay. Tapping brings you into Gemini Live with what you attached appearing above the blue/purple glow.

This is rolling out starting today to the Pixel 9 series, as well Galaxy S24 and S25, “starting today.” We’re not yet seeing this live. It will next “come to Pixel 6 and later phones soon.”

The next step will be Project Astra’s screen sharing and live video streaming capabilities in Gemini, with Google sharing the latest look at the interface today. That will be available in the “coming months” in the “Gemini app on Pixel” and S25.

Google is also beginning to roll out Deep Research to Gemini Advanced subscribers in the mobile after introducing last month in the web client. It will be available for “Pixel phones in the next few days.”

In terms of what is live today, you can “ask Gemini to use multiple extensions in a single prompt.” Multi-Extension prompts are available on Android, iOS, and the web, with the Gemini animation cycling through them.

For example, you can ask Gemini for some high-protein lunch recipes and then easily save them to a note directly on Google Keep, or ask Gemini for nearby activities and text them to a friend with Google Messages.

Outside of Gemini, Circle to Search will show AI Overviews (results) when you highlight “places, trending images, unique objects, and more.” It will also recognize phone numbers, email addresses, and URLs for one-tap calling, emailing, and browsing, respectively. Google also showed off the simpler Circle to Search UI that places everything in a pill-shaped container. This is not yet widely rolled out.
