Google Photos Backup Is About To Get A Major Upgrade

Most of the people who use Google Photos have a ton of pictures and videos backed up. It’s an extremely convenient way to keep track of your content across devices. Right now, the process of backing up your content isn’t bad, but it could be better. Well, Google could make backing up content in Photos more convenient with Material 3 Expressive.

As it stands, when you’re in the process of backing up photos and videos, you’ll see a little icon on your profile picture. Tapping on your profile picture will show you how many items are in the backup. While that’s convenient, it’s tough to gauge how long it will take before the process finishes. So, you’ll need to wait for the process to finish.

This was spotted in an APK deep dive performed by Android Authority. If you usually record content and set your phone down, then it won’t really affect you. However, if you’re in a rush and you need to know how long it will take to upload your content, it’d be nice to get an estimate.

Google is planning to revamp the backup process with the introduction of Material 3 Expressive. This is the new design language that Google is introducing across its apps. With this change, you’ll see some new icons at the top of the screen. Firstly, if you have backup turned off, then you’ll see a little button at the top left of the screen with the Google Photos icon.

If you have it enabled and you’re in the process of backing up content, then it will show you how many items it’s backing up and how long it will take for the process to finish. It will also recommend that the user keep the app open so that the upload process can go faster.

Once the process finishes, you’ll see a “Backup Complete” button. If you tap on that button, the app will show you how many items were just backed up. Finally, there could also be a “Preparing to backup” button that appears at the top of the screen when it’s getting ready to start backing up.
