Summary

  • Google Play Games may be discontinued soon.
  • Google is adding its features to the Play Store.
  • There is no clarity as to when Google will retire the app.

Google is infamous for killing its products relatively quickly, and sometimes, those might also include popular ones like Chromecast, Google Podcast, and more. We saw this in action last year, as the Mountain View tech giant killed at least eight apps and services in 2024. Although no one other than Google can tell how many apps and services Google is planning to retire in 2025, the company may have decided to discontinue at least one familiar app this year.

Google Play Games may have its days numbered

The next app to join the ever-growing list of products killed by Google might be Google Play Games, according to famed APK Teardown Specialist, AssembleDebug on X (formerly known as Twitter). Although not officially confirmed by Google, it may have started signaling the app’s eventual demise when the company started adding key Google Play Games features to the Google Play Store.

As pointed out by AssembleDebug, one of the Google Play Games features that has been added to the Google Play Store is the ability to track achievements. Many Android users on Reddit previously claimed to use the Google Play Games app specifically for this feature. In addition to this, the company reportedly has plans to introduce other noteworthy Google Play Games features, including the ability to manage your Gamer profile and follow other gamers, in the Google Play Store in future updates. On the contrary, no major features have been added to Google Play Games in a long time. All these developments point to Google might soon kill the Google Play Games app, as per the APK Teardown Specialist.

However, don’t confuse this with Google Play Games for PC. The Google Play Games for Windows came into existence only in 2022 and is still in beta. And since Microsoft killed Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), Google Play Games for Windows is perhaps one of the few reliable ways to play Android games on your PC, even if you don’t have an Android phone. The Google Play Games Android app, on the other hand, debuted way back in 2013 with features like “instant play” and some casual games.

While there is no clarity over when Google will retire the Google Play Games Android app, it’s unlikely to happen before Google brings all its key features to the Google Play Store. But since we’re still a long way from the end of 2025, there is plenty of time for Google to work on that if it genuinely wants to kill the app this year. Meanwhile, you can check out Killed by Google if you want to know about every product Google has discontinued to date.
