Google May Keep Both The “Hey Gemini” And “Hey Google” Hotwords

Google, as you all know, has made remarkable progress with Gemini AI. In fact, the company has been constantly treating Gemini with new capabilities. Soon, there’ll be a time when it completely replaces the old Google Assistant. Now, it seems the company will also make the “Hey Google” hotword co-exist with “Hey Gemini.”

The old “Hey Google” hotword could co-exist with the new “Hey Gemini”

For the uninitiated, Google has been continuously dropping hints of switching to the “Hey Gemini” hotword. Now, folks over at Android Authority have also found some clues of Google already marching on that path.

When digging through the codes of the Google app beta version 16.7.21, the publication spotted a new hotword alongside “Hey Google.” Of course, the hotword in the code strings of the Google app doesn’t specifically mention “Hey Gemini.” But, anyone who has seen Google’s demo for Android XR can tell that the mystery hot word is, indeed, “Hey Gemini.”

In the video, you can hear the women interacting with the AR glasses with the “Hey Gemini” hotword and not “Hey Google.” Now, the presence of a mystery hotword in the code strings hints that Google is actually on the move.

The new hotword might be available only on some devices

We can’t tell if the company is planning to completely replace the “Hey Google” hotword with “Hey Gemini.” But, one thing is sure; it’ll at least allow users to have the option to choose between the old hotword and the new one.

It’s important to note that the code string mentions that the new hotword will only be available on some devices. All that said, Google hasn’t started rolling out the change just yet. So, there’s still some time before you’ll be able to trigger your AI assistant with the “Hey Gemini” hotword.
