Google Maps on Android Automotive OS has removed the estimated time of arrival (ETA) from the driver’s dashboard on some vehicle, but it doesn’t seem to be an update on Google’s part.
In many vehicles with Android Automotive OS – the majority of which are electric vehicles – there is a screen in place of the traditional instrument cluster, giving the driver more flexibility in what is displayed directly behind the wheel, including their Google Maps turn-by-turn navigation.
Through a recent Google Maps update on Android Automotive, though, one feature appears to have been removed. Previously, Google Maps would show the driver’s ETA through the instrument cluster, which has now been removed in some Android Automotive vehicles.
Previously, the ETA appeared in a small bubble below turn-by-turn navigation, but simply does not appear in the latest updates.
This specifically appears to be affecting Volvo and Polestar vehicles, as the two brands are intertwined in many ways. Complaints have popped up on Google’s forums, Reddit, and various Volvo and Polestar-specific forums. The removal is widespread and appears directly related to the latest firmware updates from Volvo and Polestar rather than a Google Maps change. This feature was initially added in August 2024.
It’s unclear when, if at all, this might be fixed. However, ETAs do still appear in Google Maps when running normal Android Auto instead of the full Android Automotive experience.
