Google Maps Already Supports Android 16's Live Updates Notifications [Gallery]

Google Maps has been updated with support for Live Updates in Android 16 as the beta continues on.

Through the latest Google Maps updates (v25.09.02 and higher), Google has just delivered the very first app with support for one of the new features in Android 16. Live Updates were announced alongside Android 16 Beta 2, but no apps have had the necessary updates to support it, leading to demo apps being needed to show how it works.

But now, Google Maps has added support.

While it’s not as complete as we expect it to be in the future, Google Maps running on a Pixel device with Android 16 Beta 2.1 can use Live Updates – it does not work on Android 16 Beta 2. The app will show itself in a pill at the top of the display when navigation is ongoing, and tapping that notification will show additional contents which can “stick” to the top of the screen for several seconds, even if you interact with other apps.

In the “app info” display, Maps also shows an option to toggle off “Live Info.”

The pill notification only appears, though, if Picture-in-Picture is turned off.

The implementation here is nearly identical to how we see it on the Galaxy S25 series (running Android 15), but since Google Maps needed another update to bring this to Android 16, it stands to reason the two are still separate.

Android 16 is set to see its full release in a matter of months, and we’ll probably see more apps adopt Live Notifications once that happens.
