Google Assistant launched on the Sense and Versa smartwatches in 2020. Now, it’s shutting down.

In a post that went under the radar in late March, Google announced that the Assistant app for Fitbit smartwatches would be shutting down “over the next few weeks.” Google first announced this change in 2024, but it hasn’t been implemented until now.

Google explains:

Over the next few weeks we will be progressively phasing out Google Assistant on your Fitbit device. You can learn more about this process here. This change means that Google Assistant voice control for activities will soon no longer be available on your Fitbit device.

Users are now seeing a pop-up in the Assistant app for Fitbit smartwatches that notes that “Google Assistant on Fitbit watches is being turned down, this feature will stop working in the coming weeks.”

This comes as Google is slowly transitioning Assistant to Gemini across all of its platforms. Most notably, Android will be doing away with Assistant with Gemini taking its place in the near future. Beyond that, Google effectively did away with this functionality in 2022 when it neglected to launch Assistant, and many other apps and features, on Fitbit Sense 2 and Versa 4. Google has since also moved away from Fitbit smartwatches, instead focusing on the Pixel Watch as a Fitbit-integrated smartwatch and Fitbit as a brand for fitness trackers.
