Summary
The Audio Overview tool made its way to Google Gemini last month, but the feature is currently broken.
Trying to generate an Audio Overview returns an error message, with the issue impacting both free and paid tiers of Gemini.
Fortunately, Audio Overviews appear to be functioning normally in NotebookLM.
Audio Overviews are among the more exciting aspects of Google’s NotebookLM, enabling users to convert several paragraphs of text into an engaging audio conversation no different from a “deep dive” podcast. The feature trickled down to Google Gemini on the web and its mobile apps last month, available to both free and paying subscribers. Unfortunately, not all is well with Audio Overviews as of this weekend, with the powerful AI tool unable to generate new overviews.

As reported by 9to5Google, the issue impacts both the Gemini 2.0 Flash and 2.5 Pro (Experimental) models in the app and web experiences. It’s also worth noting that Audio Overviews are broken for both free and paying customers of Gemini, though the former group only gets a limited number of these overviews.
When functional, this tool lets you upload a supported document and get a free-flowing audio-based summary of the text by tapping the Generate Audio Overview button. But the process isn’t immediate. Gemini informs the user that it could take a few minutes, depending on the size of the document. Users can leave the chat at this point, as a notification will let them know when the overview is ready.
While things work fine until here, with even the notification popping up as usual, the result is an error message. I repeated the process with PDF and DOCX files, only to find the same error. However, Gemini did offer to “provide a text summary” or “answer specific questions” about the uploaded document.
NotebookLM is currently unaffected
We found that Audio Overviews work as they should in NotebookLM, so if you’re looking to access the tool immediately, you can still do so on the website. Unfortunately, NotebookLM is a web-only experience right now, but that’s changing soon. In the meantime, we hope the Gemini team is aware of this particular glitch and will do what is necessary to remedy it.
Away from this Gemini Audio Overviews bug, some Gemini Advanced subscribers briefly found the older Gemini 2.0 Experimental Advanced model appearing in the list. This appears to have been a mistake by Google, though, with the model now disappearing, as the folks at 9to5 noted in another report.
Meanwhile, in recent Gemini-related developments, the latest and greatest Gemini 2.5 Pro (Experimental) model recently picked up support for Deep Research. But like with some Gemini features, this particular addition is limited to Gemini Advanced customers (for now).
