In 2022, Google Docs added initial support for code blocks that let you insert code in a neat, defined space, rendered in monospace font. That initial rollout included support for a handful of coding languages: C, C++, Java, JavaScript, and Python. Today, Google’s announced that code blocks are getting a big upgrade on Workspace accounts, with a bunch of new code languages coming.

The update, which is only confirmed for enterprise Workspace accounts at this time, greatly expands code block compatibility inside Google Docs, with more than a dozen new code languages added. Here’s the complete list, as shared by Google:

Google says Workspace admins don’t need to do anything to enable the updated code blocks feature; it’s rolling out now to Rapid Release domains and will begin rolling out to Scheduled Release domains starting on April 23. The rollout should be complete by two weeks after that second date.

As far as non-Workspace accounts, Google hasn’t said when we might expect to see the new code block functionality.

How to add code blocks in Google Docs

To insert a code block in Google Docs on an applicable Workspace account, click Insert, then Building blocks, then Code blocks. From there, you can choose which code language you want to use.
