Google’s Material 3 Expressive is the big design upgrade we’re all waiting for, and we’ve seen some Google apps already taking steps to incorporate elements of the new design language, including Google Clock. Last month, an extensive leak gave us a glimpse of what the app’s Material 3 Expressive makeover looks like. Now we have yet another, albeit minor, look at the changes coming to the app, courtesy of an upcoming version of Google Clock.

An APK teardown of Google Clock v7.14 by the folks at Android Authority has revealed the inclusion of Material 3 Expressive-compliant toggles, distinctively different from their older/current counterparts. Unfortunately, I could not sideload this specific version of Google Clock on my device, since an APK isn’t available for download (yet).

Thanks to the screenshots provided by the site, we’re also getting a look at the updated design on the Clock app’s Settings page. While it may be difficult to tell the difference, a closer look at how the toggles are highlighted (both when on and off) makes the changes apparent.

The makeover isn’t complete yet

Current vs upcoming versions of the Clock app’s Alarm and Settings pages

We’re not seeing the relocated floating action button (FAB) on the Alarms page that was highlighted by last month’s leak. This suggests that version 7.14 is still some distance away from incorporating all elements of Material 3 Expressive. Google Clock version 8.0 is expected to be the version that brings about the overhaul, though it’s unclear when it will be available.

Of course, we’ve already gotten a more elaborate look at Google Clock’s extensive redesign last month. That leak gave us a glimpse of the redesigned Timer page, which will reportedly be renamed to Timers, while also gaining preset options for 5, 10, 30, and 45-minute timers.

The Timers tab’s redesign also puts the pause/resume button inside the active timer’s circle, thus making it easily accessible. Meanwhile, the Clock tab in the app is expected to be renamed World Clock.

As for the Alarms tab, some of the changes we saw in that May leak have not yet been reflected in the Google Clock version analyzed by Android Authority. Some other changes are also expected, such as an increased focus on active timers by highlighting the entire tab, as you can see above.

This comes after Android 16’s release earlier this week, which, as Google explained, “lays the foundation” for Material 3 Expressive. More Material 3 Expressive updates are expected imminently, beginning with the Android 16 QPR1 update in September.
