A bug with Ambient Mode on Cast-powered Chromecasts drastically shrinks the time and weather that’s displayed in the bottom-right corner.
Over the past few days, owners of non-Google TV Chromecasts have noticed that the weather and clock have drastically shrunk, with the latter being smaller than the former. The temperature, condition icon, and time are now about the same size as the text for the image credits/details below it.
As such, it’s quite hard to make out from a distance, thus defeating a key aspect of why people keep their televisions on throughout the day. Other parts of the Ambient Mode UI look fine.
This was most likely caused by a server-side change rather than any firmware update. We’re seeing this issue on a 2nd-gen Chromecast, but presumably the 1st and 3rd gen, as well as the Ultra, are impacted by this bug.
Playing around with Ambient Mode settings in the Google Home app does not fix anything. It’s a pretty widespread issue and clearly a bug, so hopefully Google will fix it in short order.
We don’t have this time and weather bug on the Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer.
More on Chromecasts:
- Google’s reason for ending the Chromecast makes sense, but there’s an obvious problem
- Google is no longer making Chromecasts and will let inventory run out
- ‘Google Cast’ is replacing the ‘Chromecast built-in’ brand
