Gemini’s Deep Research Feature Is Now Available In The IPhone App

Google has finally launched the Gemini AI assistant’s Deep Research feature for the iPhone app. It originally introduced the new functionality in Gemini for Android and is now rolling it out to the iPhone app’s Gemini Advanced subscribers. Google says that Deep Research “uses advanced reasoning and long context capabilities to act as a research assistant, exploring complex topics and compiling reports on your behalf”. Google introduced it as Gemini’s first “agentic” feature in December last year.

Gemini 1.5 Pro LLM model currently powers Deep Research in Gemini for iPhone. Google will soon use the Gemini 2.0 Pro model once it gets out of the experimental phase. As of now, it’s not clear when that upgrade will happen. This feature is available in the model picker section of the Gemini app. You can select the “1.5 Pro with Deep Research” option from there. It sits alongside Gemini 2.0 Flash, the new 2.0 experimental models, and the 1.5 family, which will soon face discontinuation.

After selecting the Gemini 1.5 Pro model in the Gemini app, you can tap on the “Start Research” option after making a query. Then, Gemini will take around 5-10 minutes on average to search the web, go through websites, and perform any new searches based on what it has learned, depending on your query.

More complex queries take longer to complete in Deep Research

It’s worth mentioning that the Deep Research feature repeats the search process many times during this period. It goes without saying that more complex queries will take longer for Deep Research. You can also leave or close the Gemini app once research has started. It will automatically send you a notification once the research is complete.

Furthermore, you can go through the Chat history to access the previously researched topics or queries. Gemini will provide you with a report for your query, organizing it into sections with tables when relevant. It will also have the sources listed at the bottom. You can also conveniently export the report to Google Docs.

It’s worth adding that there are limits for “Daily research requests” and the “Number of research requests you can run at the same time”. Gemini will automatically notify you how many research requests are remaining for the day.
