According to hints in Google’s code, Gemini is seemingly on its way to cars with Android Automotive in a move that should surprise no one.
One of the benefits of Android Automotive – the native OS for cars that’s not to be confused with the phone-projected Android Auto – is that it brings Google apps and services, including Assistant, to your car’s native infotainment system. But as Assistant crumbles while Gemini takes center stage, it comes as no surprise that Google is working to replace Assistant with Gemini on Android Automotive.
Strings found within the Google Assistant car app for Android Automotive OS by Android Authority leave virtually no doubt that Gemini will soon replace Assistant behind the wheel. One of the strings directly says:
Speak more naturally and get more done with your new assistant, reimagined with Google AI
Apparently, a “try later” button will be in place, meaning this is likely a phased replacement rather than a hard switch. That’s probably best for a platform that users have no choice but to use in their vehicles.

There’s no word on when this might arrive, but it comes as Google is moving towards Gemini for Android Auto, the phone-projected platform in use on multiple millions of vehicles on the road today. Google itself directly said that Gemini would be coming to “cars” earlier this year while announcing the coming shutdown of Assistant in favor of Gemini on Android phones.
