Gemini Replacing Google Assistant On Chromebooks

Following the Android announcement last week, Gemini is set to replace Google Assistant on Chromebooks.

Google Assistant first debuted on the Pixelbook in 2017 before rolling out to all other devices in 2019. At the moment, it exists as an icon in the top-right corner of the Launcher. Tapping opens Google Assistant as a floating window. You could also quickly launch with the Launcher/Search key + a key combo. 

In terms of capabilities, Assistant could control some device settings (like Turn on Night Light mode, Increase the volume to xx%), set reminders, take notes, play music, and more.

Starting with ChromeOS 134, which is rolling out from today onwards, Gemini will appear instead. A tap opens the Gemini app (Progressive Web App) on Chromebooks, which Google has prominently been adding in recent months as part of Chromebook Plus.

Assistive experiences on Chromebooks are now powered by Gemini

Starting in M134, assistive experiences on Chromebooks will be powered by Gemini. When triggering Assistant, you will automatically be directed to the Gemini app on your Chromebook.

There is no “Hey Google” hotword support for Gemini. It’s the same functionality available on gemini.google.com, so you can access @Gmail, @Google Drive, etc. The Gemini app/Extension for @Google Home is not available on the web, just Android and iOS at the moment. (One alternative is downloading the Google Home app from the Play Store.)

Google Assistant was nice to have on Chromebooks, but a voice-first assistant is somewhat less critical on this form factor. Instead, quick access to a chatbot is more helpful to aid productive. 

Looking forward, Gemini is coming to Wear OS and more headphones, while Gemini-powered experiences are coming to speakers, displays, and TVs.
