Google seems to be preparing support for Gemini on Android Auto, as well as the more conversational Gemini Live experience.

As the move away from Google Assistant continues, Gemini has been expanding to more of Google’s platforms. It’s widely available on smartphones, on its way to Google TV and smart speakers, and also in the works for Wear OS.

There was a glimpse of Gemini on Android Auto early this year, but it seems progress is being made. Android Authority managed to enable the long-winded experience earlier this week, and has also spotted that Gemini Live is in development as well. While the former looks pretty rough around the edges and will need some optimization to be a good fit for the case, the idea of bringing Gemini Live to Android Auto is certainly an intriguing one.

The Gemini Live experience is highly conversational and also designed to be interrupted. Live could certainly hold a place in the car without many changes, as the driver could essentially hold a conversation with the assistant to get answers just as they would with a passenger looking up the same details on their device. With integration between Live and Maps or media apps, that could be powerful. Beyond that, Astra’s memory with something like Google’s since-forgotten dashcam feature for Pixel phones could also make this handy. But that’s all speculation, for now.

As it stands in the current stage of developement, Gemini Live appears as a button and then takes over the media widget on Android Auto’s dashboard.

We reported on Google referencing Gemini Live on Android Auto in September 2024.
