There are multiple ways the Gemini for Android feels superior to using some of its rival AI chat apps, like ChatGPT, due to its tight integration with the OS and many other Google services. While it still lags behind its competitors in some areas, Google is hard at work to improve the overall Gemini experience by introducing features that you’ll want to use.

Earlier this month, Google was spotted working on a new swipe gesture to make Gemini Live access easier and a new powerful time-saving trick from Google Search. Now, on top of these, Google has more plans for Gemini, and some of those have now come to our knowledge, thanks to Android Authority’s APK teardown of the 16.23.69.sa.arm64 beta release of the Google app for Android.

What are Google’s plans to improve Gemini?

A few days ago, folks over at Android Authority spotted Google working on a new compact overlay for the Gemini Live, which will allow users to start a conversation without launching the full-screen interface. This new overlay isn’t available to the general public, perhaps because the Mountain View tech giant has plans to introduce more improvements to the new overlay before making it available for everyone.

According to the details that emerged in the latest APK teardown, one of the improvements Google is currently testing is a new floating Live button when you minimize the app. Although not publicly available, Android Authority managed to enable it on Android phones, and based on the demo it showed, the new floating Live button appears in the bottom left corner of your display. Tapping this button will likely reveal the bottom Gemini Live overlay bar with all those control options. Like the bar-style design, the floating Live overlay also features an audio waveform visualization when it’s listening to you.

There is no clarity on when, or if, these changes will be available to the general public. But assuming Google intends to introduce them in the near future, they might improve your productivity on Android, providing you more ways to start a Live conversation and access its useful control options more quickly when the app is minimized.
