Gemini Is Coming To Android Auto, Here’s How It’ll Function

Contents
Google has transformed Gemini into a full-fledged AI assistant in a span of just two years after initially introducing it as “Bard” in February 2023. It has already replaced Google Assistant on Android smartphones. Google is investing heavily to integrate Gemini into as many of its products as possible. The company is planning to weave the AI assistant into Google TV in the coming months. In addition, Gemini will soon be available for the Android Auto platform as well. Ahead of an official announcement, folks over at Android Authority have posted a video that shows how Gemini will work in Android Auto.
Gemini for Android Auto will act similarly to its implementation on smartphones
In the video example, the source presents a version of the Gemini AI assistant that doesn’t seem optimized for in-vehicle queries. Most of the part, it is acting similar to Gemini’s implementation on smartphones and other devices.
For example, the publication instructed Gemini on Android Auto to plan a trip within a specific budget. The AI assistant was able to answer, complete with the duration of trip, a budget breakdown, and how to travel. However, these answers weren’t necessarily location-specific or optimized for an in-car assistant. Essentially, the assistant didn’t provide the most practical travel options based on the user’s distance from the location.
Additionally, the team tasked Gemini with searching for nearby restaurants. While the AI assistant was able to provide some options, it didn’t include them on the in-vehicle display map. It could be a solid addition to Gemini’s functionalities on the Android Auto platform.
Gemini for vehicles will have better conversational abilities
It’s worth mentioning that in the video, Gemini for in-vehicle displays handled routine tasks like playing a song on Spotify with ease. Gemini appears to be far better than Google Assistant when it comes to conversations. When asked about the weather or a landmark, the AI delivered detailed, engaging responses, which are far better than the shorter, more factual answers offered by Google Assistant.
The source mentioned that in their demo, Gemini was running on an Android smartphone, simulating a car dashboard rather than a real vehicle’s display. The assistant isn’t available publicly at the moment. Also, the AI assistant may work differently and offer more functionalities once Google officially rolls it out. We will let you know as soon as we hear anything, so stay tuned for more updates.
