Gemini Apps (Prev. Extensions) Are Using 2.0 Flash Thinking

Earlier this week, Google rebranded “Extensions” in Gemini to just “apps.” Google has now shared that these Gemini apps are now powered by 2.0 Flash Thinking (experimental).

Google announced its first reasoning model in December and released an updated version in January for developers. Last month, Google made 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental available for users of the Gemini app.

The company shared today that “2.0 Flash Thinking (experimental)” is now being used to power Gemini apps like @Gmail, @Google Drive, @Google Docs, etc. This specific announcement is for “Google Workspace users accessing the Gemini app or Gemini Advanced,” so it’s unclear whether consumers have also been switched over.

The model powering apps in Gemini upgraded to 2.0 Flash Thinking (experimental). Built on the foundation of 2.0 Flash, this model delivers improved performance and better advanced reasoning capabilities with efficiency and speed.

This model upgrade is said to offer “improved performance and better advanced reasoning capabilities with efficiency and speed.”

It’s notable that Google is already deploying and using its reasoning models in production software. This bodes well for Google’s reasoning model exiting “Experimental” status in gemini.google.com and becoming available for developers (currently: gemini-2.0-flash-thinking-exp-01-21) that want to use it in their third-party applications.
