Gemini AI Will Finally Reach Smart Watches & Cars This Year

Ever since Google announced Gemini, everything pointed to the new AI-powered chatbot replacing the classic Google Assistant at some point. After a few years of development and major improvements, Gemini became the default assistant on Android devices. The next big step for Google will be to integrate Gemini into other platforms, such as watches, cars, and even earphones.

In addition to Android, Google has been integrating Gemini’s capabilities into many of its software products. Paid plans for the Workspace suite offer access to many useful additional AI-powered features. The power of Google’s artificial intelligence is available in services like Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, and even Google Photos.

Smart watches and cars are ideal platforms for Gemini

It’s striking that Gemini hasn’t yet made its way to Wear OS and Android Auto. The nature of these products seems ideal for a powerful AI assistant that easily understands your voice commands. Perhaps the Mountain View giant wanted to use the Android version to achieve a fully featured version first instead of shipping an “incomplete” assistant to other platforms. Regardless, Google already considers Gemini mature enough to be available for those systems.

Alphabet—Google’s parent company—recently held its Q1 2025 earnings call. There, Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed Gemini’s integration into smartwatches, cars, and earphones for this year. “We’re upgrading Google Assistant on mobile devices to Gemini, and later this year we’ll upgrade tablets, cars, and devices that connect to your phone, such as headphones and watches,” he said.

Google has scheduled an I/O developer event for May 20 and 21. Hopefully, the company will offer more news related to this announcement during the conference.

It’s noteworthy that there are still more Google platforms waiting to receive Gemini. Pichai didn’t mention anything about Google’s smart speakers or Google TV products, for example. Those devices still use the same Google Assistant experience to work. Fortunately, Google Assistant is still pretty good today. However, it would be great if users of these products received the best the company has to offer in terms of voice assistants.
