Currently, the Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch wearables seem to be the main faces in the Wear OS segment. Samsung achieved this position after its joint work with Google to revamp Android Wear a few years ago. Plus, Galaxy Watch devices are usually packed with useful features, and in the near future, they could even receive non-invasive blood glucose monitoring.
Blood glucose monitoring is essential for diabetics who have to keep their levels under control. However, measuring such values can be unpleasant for many. People who use products to track their blood sugar levels have to stick a needle in their finger to get a sample that can be analyzed. So, a method to noninvasively and accurately measure this parameter could be a game changer.
After a long time working on it, Galaxy Watch devices could finally get blood glucose monitoring
Samsung is one of the companies that has been working on this for a long time. But years have gone by, and still none of the Galaxy Watches have this feature. It’s noteworthy that Apple is also working on something similar, according to reports. Early in 2024, there were even rumors that the feature would be present in the Apple Watch Series 10. However, it did not come out that way.
Returning to Samsung, the company held this week the Galaxy Tech Forum in San Jose, California. During the conference, Samsung’s Senior Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team at Mobile eXperience Business, Dr. Hon Pak, said, “What I’m really excited about is our team, as you may have assumed, we are working on a non-invasive optically-based continuous glucose monitor. I can’t tell you the time [of the launch], but I’m very excited about the progress we are making, and this, if we do it right, will be a game-changer.”
This suggests that the firm has already made significant progress toward completing the development of the technology. So, after losing some hope, we might see the non-invasive blood glucose monitoring sooner than we thought. Even so, it’s still not certain that the system will be ready when the Galaxy Watch 8 lineup comes out later this year. Plus, it’s possible that the feature will need specific hardware, which means it can’t be sent to older models. Anyway, the important thing is that the option is ready first, and then everything else.
A potential game changer in the industry
A needle-free solution for blood glucose monitoring would give a unique selling point to Galaxy Watches. Plus, something like this could make the lives of many people who suffer from diabetes more bearable. Samsung could also go down in history as the first to implement it in the commercial market. Only time will tell if the brand beats Apple in this race or if it falls behind at the end.
