Summary

  • Some Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra users are reporting a hardware issue causing the ultrawide (0.6x) lens to rattle and fail to focus properly.
  • User reports and a confirmed repair indicate a likely hardware defect, with standard troubleshooting steps proving ineffective.
  • Despite Samsung’s lack of official acknowledgment, the S25 Ultra’s one-year warranty should allow affected users to seek camera system replacement or a device replacement.

Samsung’s latest Galaxy S25 series, specifically the top-of-the-line S25 Ultra, offers some of the best camera functionality you can expect from a flagship in 2025. Although the device didn’t receive a good deal of hardware camera upgrades, other than a new ultrawide lens, it isn’t completely devoid of enhancements. In our review of the device, we noted that the S25 Ultra is better than the S24 Ultra when it comes to handling motion, even if barely so, while support for LOG recording should please content creators and those looking to capture video memories with enhanced detail and higher dynamic range.

However, what is supposed to be a top-tier camera experience for users that have shelled out $1,300 for a brand-new flagship has been marred by the new ultrawide lens that is causing issues for some.

Reports are surfacing online that suggest (and even showcase) the S25 Ultra’s ultrawide lens starts rattling when it kicks in at 0.6x (via TechIssuesToday). From the reports I’ve seen online, this isn’t just normal vibration for when image stabilization kicks in — the lens actually seems to violently tremble, accompanied by an audible rattling sound and the lens’ inability to properly focus.

Although similar issues have been reported in the past, they’ve mostly been isolated incidents. This time around, however, most of the reports seem to have arrived simultaneously. Find a video in the embedded Reddit post below, for reference.

Users report issues right out of the box

Similar user reports have also made their way to Samsung’s community support page, and not just in the US, but also in forums for the EU and India. While some users have speculated that the issue could have arisen from an impact, potentially messing up the focus motor, others indicate that they encountered the issue with their phone “straight out of the box.”

Samsung hasn’t really been helpful in support post comments, and well, there’s not much it can do there either. The issue likely stems from faulty camera hardware, and not a software-side change. Users have tried rebooting their device and clearing the camera app’s data and cache to no avail.

One user proactively took their S25 Ultra into a Samsung-authorized repair shop, and they confirmed that this was a hardware issue. “I had to send mine to Samsung service partner today. Samsung Said it was a hardware issue,” wrote user bjarteru, adding that “Problems are fixed after the service center changed all the cameras on the phone

Although Samsung is yet to officially acknowledge the issue, users should still be able to seek recourse. All Galaxy S25 Ultra devices come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty, and considering that the camera rattling is very likely a manufacturing defect, Samsung should be able to either replace the affected camera system or offer a replacement device.
