First US Plant To Make IPhone Chips Is Ready For Production

In late 2022, Apple announced that it would start using US chipsets from TSMC’s Arizona plant in the future. TSMC said that a third of the chips made at the Arizona plant will be for the iPhone maker. At the time, the chip maker’s manufacturing plant wasn’t ready. However, the first iPhone chips plant in the US is nearing completion, reports NiKKEI Asia.

First US iPhone chips plant will begin mass production soon

According to a report by NIKKEI, the first US manufacturing plant to make iPhone chips will kick off mass production very soon. The mass production could launch as soon as later this quarter. This indicates that TSMC has already begun the test production. The company could be waiting for Apple to verify the chips produced at the Arizona plant.

Furthermore, the report states that we can expect the first batch of commercial mass-produced chips as soon as this quarter. Once Apple completes the testing, we expect the final production to kick off in Q2 2025.

As per reports, the plant will first make the A16 Bionic chip for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus along with the S9 chip for the Apple Watch Ultra 2. In the future, the manufacturing facility will also be responsible for the latest Apple products.

The initial plan was for the plant to start in 2024.

According to reports, the plant was first expected to be operational in 2024. However, the project fell behind schedule due to multiple reasons. There were reports that the plant had run over budget. Also, there were concerns about safety at the plant after several accidents. Furthermore, controversy had surrounded TSMC’s hiring for plants, with many workers brought in from Taiwan instead of recruited in the US.

That said, since now the plant will be operational soon, people will hopefully enjoy fewer delays in getting their products.
