First Look: How Google AI Mode Will Transform Your Chrome Experience

When it comes to AI, Google is wasting no time. With OpenAI hot on their heels, Google needs to get Gemini into as many hands as possible. The company has pushed AI onto many of its services and products. Now, it looks like more AI features are coming to Google Chrome, and here’s our first look at AI mode.

According to Windows Report, it got its first look at Google testing AI mode on Chrome Canary. When you open a new tab in Chrome, in the search bar, you’ll find an “AI Mode” button. This will pull up a larger compose box where you can type in your questions and get your answers.

Chrome’s AI Mode is an enhanced version of search. When you search on Google normally, you’re shown a list of websites that might contain the information you want. There’s nothing wrong with this, but it can make researching topics harder. This is because you have to go through these websites individually to find what you need. If you have additional questions, you must go through the process again.

By using AI mode, you can ask Google’s AI more complex questions. This is perfect for research where, instead of sifting through websites and dozens of pages, you can speak to Google’s AI like you would a person. Of course, AI doesn’t get it right all the time, so always do your own due diligence, especially if you’re using the information for a school report or research paper.

You can try the new AI mode for yourself if you’re interested. It is available via google.com/aimode. Just make sure you’re in the US and using a personal Google account and that you’re at least 18 years of age.

What made Google so popular was its ability to index websites and pull up the most relevant information quickly. However, with the arrival of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, things changed. Users were quick to discover that AI could answer many of their questions faster and more naturally than combing through dozens of websites to find what they wanted.

This means that Google’s search dominance is being threatened for the first time in a very long time. This is why Google is wasting no time trying to include AI features in its products like Chrome.

That being said, while AI definitely helps the end-user, it is having a negative impact on traffic for websites that rely on Google’s search. If users no longer need to click on websites to get their information, the question of the existence of these websites is raised.
