Google Home isn’t high on the ecosystem list that allows third-party manufacturers to display video feeds in-app. Now, Ecobee is one of just a few brands that can integrate video feeds from its doorbell directly through Google Home.
For quite a while, Google Home really only allowed for a couple of brands to send video to its Android, iOS, and web apps. That list was populated by Nest, to no surprise, and Arlo for some time until Google opened the floodgates for Wyze and Reolink within the last couple of years.
Ecobee announced that its video doorbell will now integrate video into the Google Home app (via The Verge). The company’s video doorbell had already been able to function properly with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit, though Google Home had been promised for some time. The Smart Doorbell Camera could even display a video feed on Ecobee’s thermostat displays.
The new update now allows for video feeds to be directly viewable in the Google Home app, without the need for a third-party solution. Users can still choose to watch video through the Ecobee app, but it isn’t the prime solution when you’re using a Google Pixel Tablet or Nest Hub Max and you want to check out the front door feed quickly.
The integration also opens up the door for all of Google’s video functions to operate properly. That includes asking Google Assistant or even Gemini to show the video feed from Ecobee’s doorbell on whichever device is preferred.
