Bluesky, And Mastodon Client Openvibe Adds Notification Support

The latest update for social media aggregator Openvibe has now officially added support for notifications with Mastodon and Bluesky.

While we await news on another potential major social network block, off the back of Twitter’s major shift away from the platform it once was in the mid-2010s, many netizens have migrated to other services such as Mastodon, Bluesky, Nostr, and Meta’s Threads. These decentralized networks all work within the fediverse, which means interoperability across each platform.

Openvibe is one of the few apps that helps consolidate the biggest of these networks into one place. You can view content from each channel in a unified timeline, cross-post to each platform, and now get notifications on interactions and activities. This was sorely missing in the first few builds, but the official Openvibe account announced it on all four platforms after testing just last week. Openvibe’s notifications are, though, limited to just Bluesky and Mastodon.

On Android, Openvibe version 1.6.0 has started rolling out and is the first build with notification support. When opening the application after updating, you’ll get a notification pop-up prompt where you can “allow” notifications. You may also need to login to specific accounts like Mastodon again at this stage too as this will enable push notifications to work correctly with your profile.

Annoyingly, if you are heavy Threads or Nostr users these services don’t yet work with Openvibe’s notification implementation. However, Openvibe gaining notifications for Bluesky and Mastodon means that, at the very least, you might not need to have 4 separate apps on your phone to stay up to date with your favorite communities.

The latest Openvibe update is rolling out now via the Google Play Store.
