Best Gaming Headset: Audeze Maxwell

AH Audeze Maxwell Review (13)

When it comes to gaming headsets, there isn’t exactly a shortage of options. And it’s that huge selection that can make finding one that isn’t awful a more challenging prospect than you might think. I’ve tested quite a few different headsets with PS5 over the years and while there have been some great ones, the headset that I keep coming back to for every PS5 gaming session these days is the Audeze Maxwell.

There are just so many good things about it that it’s hard not to recommend. Even over other headsets that I absolutely love. The two biggest factors here are the battery life and the comfort. While I have generally recommended people go for the Pulse headset from Sony for its extreme value and affordability or the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless for its premium quality, the Audeze Maxwell outshines everything. First, let’s talk about the battery life. It can last for up to 80 hours on a single charge.

This long-lasting battery life makes not having the hot-swappable batteries of the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless a non-issue. Because it will literally be weeks before you need to charge it up. Yes, the SteelSeries headset essentially has zero downtime, because there’s always a charged battery ready to go. This isn’t much of an issue either. The Audeze Maxwell supports Quick Charging and can be back to a full battery in less than a couple of hours. So you can just plug it in when you aren’t able to play and you’re good to go.

As for the comfort, as I said in my review, the ear cups and super soft leather ear pads hug your ears like they’re sandwiched between two pillowy clouds. You will be able to wear it all day with zero discomfort. The headset is a bit heavy, and it may take time to get used to it. But trust me when I say once you get past the weight, it’ll be the most comfortable gaming headset for PS5 that you’ve ever worn. Perhaps the most comfortable gaming headset period.

Another huge reason why this is the headset to buy is the sound quality. Thanks to the use of planar magnetic drivers, you get unmatched sound quality and immersive audio. So it feels like and sounds like you’re in the game. Using this headset, I was able to pick up on sounds I’d never heard before in games I have been playing for years. That’s truly uncanny. The Audeze Maxwell is a premium wireless headset and at a price of $299, it’s certainly not cheap. However, it’s worth every penny.

Best Standard Controller: Sony DualSense

PS5 DualSense Controller 5

You obviously can’t play games on the PS5 without the DualSense controller. The PS5 does come with one controller, but if you want to play with a friend or family member, then you’ll need an extra.

If you’re like me, then you simply like to have a backup controller or two with full batteries ready to go. If you ever have one die on you, then you have one with a full charge that you can pick up and connect in seconds. Meanwhile, you can toss the other controller onto the charging station or plug it in with a USB-C cable and charge it back up.

This is a nifty setup to have because you will always have a controller ready to use. The DualSense controller offers things like adaptive triggers, a touchpad just like the DualShock 4, new and improved thumbsticks, and a slightly larger design than the DualShock 4 too.

A controller is obviously a required accessory for the PS5. But this one is one of the best accessories for the PS5. Because it’s the tried and true option that was designed specifically for the console by Sony. It’s one of if not the most comfortable controllers out there. And now that it comes in several different color options, there are tons to choose from so you can personalize your setup with your favorite colors and designs. Plus, you can find it on sale pretty often.

Best Pro Controller: DualSense Edge

DualSense Edge Controller

While the DualSense controller is the best option for a normal controller, the DualSense Edge is the one to go for if you want something a little more premium. This is Sony’s official pro controller with several enhanced features. For starters, it has built-in rubberized grips on the hand grips for a little more control and less slippage. This is one of the more minor upgrades though.

The biggest reasons to get a DualSense Edge are the customizable back paddle buttons. As well as the joystick modules you can pop out and replace. The customizable button mapping features on PS5 is a nice feature. You can also use this menu to adjust joystick sensitivity. The battery life is not as good as a regular DualSense but I can say with certainty, you get over that pretty quickly because of how good the controller is for certain games.

If you’re big into shooters, then you want this controller. It’s also been a huge benefit for me in games like Elden Ring and Black Myth: Wukong. Because those back paddle buttons can be remapped for quick dodging and other various functions crucial to survival. What about the joystick modules? While Sony didn’t start using Hall Effect sticks, it did make the joystick modules on the DualSense Edge user-replaceable. All you have to do is hit the release switch on the back of the controller to lift off the shell piece that surrounds the joysticks, then flip the switch underneath to unlock the module that needs to be replaced. This allows it to slide right out, and you can slide a new one right in. Then just put the shell piece back on and you’re done.

It’s a simple solution that makes this controller worth the extra money. As you won’t need to send it in for repairs if a joystick goes bad. Then there’s the nice little extras. The controller comes with a hard shell travel case with storage for the USB-C to USB-A cable, the controller itself, and there’s even a little spot for the replacement joystick. The controller also comes with a piece that locks the USB-C part of the cable into the controller so it can’t accidentally be yanked out. All-in-all, even at $199 it’s a solid accessory and one of the best you can get for the PS5.

Best Charging Accessory: Sony DualSense Charging Station

AH DualSense Charging Station

The DualSense Charging Station is a definite must-have accessory whether you’re going to have more than one controller or not. It’s just much simpler to charge the controller (s) this way than plugging them into your console with the USB-A to USB-C cable. Not to mention, you can’t even charge your controllers that way without the console either being powered on or in rest mode.

The DualSense Charging station is hooked up to its own power source separate from the console. So you can set your controllers on it and they’ll charge up even if the console is fully powered off. And if you’re like me, you prefer to fully power it off most of the time. Another big bonus is that the Charging Station works with the DualSense Edge. There are zero issues with getting the DualSense Edge into place for charging. As it slots in just like the regular DualSense controller does.

It doesn’t snag on anything either so it s a quick and seamless action. This is also a fairly affordable PS5 accessory at $30. Because of its cost, it’s an easy pickup along with an additional controller or even if you’re sticking with one. Because it’s a much easier solution to charging. It may not be a fancy or super exciting accessory, but you definitely want one.

Best Gaming Earbuds: SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds

AH SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds

The SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds are the best option for audio for people who don’t like full-on headsets. Alternatively, if you like headsets and already own one, these are still great for when you don’t feel like wearing one. Since they fit into your ears, there’s no weight on your head and neck. That can sometimes feel more comfortable. The other really nice thing about them is that you can play with one earbud. Leaving you free to hear noises around you out of the ear that doesn’t have an earbud.

In most cases, I would say the experience is better when wearing both earbuds. However, sometimes you may have people watching you that you want to talk to you while you play. Or, you may simply want to be able to hear noises outside your game for any other reason. Maybe you’re waiting for something at the door and you don’t want to miss it.

These are also very comfortable even after playing for a few hours. They connect to the PS5 using a 2.4GHz low-latency dongle as well. So you get lag-free sound and a seamless connection to the PS5. Additionally, the sound quality and immersiveness are way better than you’d expect. At times I almost felt like I was getting better sound out of these than most of the headsets I own. Which is saying something.

When you’re done using these with the PS5, they can easily connect to your mobile device for Bluetooth audio. So you can use them for voice calls, music, or anything else. Plus, they have a charging case that supports Qi wireless charging if you don’t feel like plugging the case in. And they provide up to 10 hours of game audio, or up to 40 with the charging case. They have 360-degree spatial audio as well.

You might think earbuds aren’t a good option for gaming audio. But let me tell you, with these earbuds, that couldn’t be further from the truth. And at $160, they’re reasonably priced, not to mention less expensive than Sony’s PlayStation Pulse Explore earbuds.

Best Accessory For Movies and TV: Sony PS5 Media Remote

PS5 Remote

If you had a PS4 and used it to watch streaming TV content, but didn’t get a media remote to control stuff, you probably know the pain of navigating using the DualShock 4 instead.

While it does work, it’s not as enjoyable or as convenient as using a remote. So don’t make the same mistake with the PS5. Enter the PS5 Media Remote that not only has a more natural feeling set of buttons for the purpose of watching TV but also dedicated buttons for a few of the top streaming services.

This includes a button for Disney+ (so you can easily get caught up on the Mandalorian), Netflix, and YouTube. It also has a Spotify button if you want to pull up some music while you play games.

Of course, it also has pause/play buttons. In addition to volume up and down buttons, and a mute button. There’s a mic button, and buttons for skipping tracks or seeking through your video content as well. All in all, this is one of the best PS5 accessories to have if you plan to watch video content on the console.

What’s nice about this remote too, is that it uses AA batteries to power it. So you don’t have to worry about recharging it ever. You just swap out the batteries when they die and you’re good to go. To me, this is much simpler than having another device to plug in.

Best Expandable Storage Drive: WD_Black SN850P 4TB NVMe SSD

WD Black SN850P NVMe SSD

Storage on the original PS5, and even on the new PS5 Slim, is only 1TB. That’s enough to get you started, but games fill up the internal storage fast. With that said, you’re going to want an M.2 NVMe SSD for the expandable storage that the PS5 supports. Our recommendation on this is the WD_Black SN850P from Western Digital. Specifically the 4TB model. At $329 it’s certainly an investment, but with 4TB on top of the internal storage, you’ll likely never run out of space for games.

If you buy a lot of physical disc copies of PS5 games, then you can still get this same NVMe SSD with a smaller storage capacity all the way down to 1TB. Alternatively, if you want to go big, there’s even an 8TB model. The reason why we think the 4TB model is the best option is because it’s only $329.99. This is compared to $699.99 for the 8TB. 4TB is plenty of space for games in our opinion. This model comes with a heatsink so you don’t have to buy an aftermarket one either. You just open up the expansion slot, screw this in, and close the console up.

It’s as easy as pie. In terms of performance, this has extremely fast read and write speeds. That’s going to mean faster transfer times. Specifically, if you move games back and forth between the internal storage and the expansion drive. Plus it’ll mean faster load times for your installed games. The 4TB model is the one I’m currently using in my own PS5 and it’s been great. It performs better than other drives I’ve used (both of which were still good), and thus far I’ve only filled up half the storage even after having it for more than a year and a half.

Best Accessory for VR: PS VR2 Headset

PS VR2

Sony’s PS VR2 headset is a great accessory add-on for the gamer who loves VR or wants to finally begin their adventure with VR games. While a bit spendy, the price has come down a significant amount since its launch and it’s more readily available. Not to mention, you can often find it in the bundles that come with a free game. The one we’re highlighting in this guide is the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle. This comes with the headset, the two controllers, and a redemption code for Horizon Call of the Mountain.

So you immediately have something to play after setting up the headset. This bundle is currently on sale for $429.99 and it normally retails for $599.99. So it’s currently available at a good price. Keep in mind the price may change from time to time. The PS VR2 features 4K HDR visuals and it has a 110-degree field of view. So it has noticeably better visuals than the original model. It also connects with one single cable this time around, which is a way simpler setup.

If you have either limited space for cables or you just like things to look more organized, this is way more convenient for that. What’s nice about the controllers is that they come with the advanced features of the DualSense controller. So you get the advanced haptics and the adaptive triggers. There’s also a really neat feature included that allows the controllers to sense when you pick them up. Finger touch detection is what Sony calls it, and it can even tell when you’re not pressing a button. So using them is more immersive than before.

The headset has built-in haptic feedback as well for even more immersive gameplay. Plus, the feedback is subtle so as not to be too jarring. Of course, the headset also supports Sony’s 3D Audio, which helps with the immersion as well.

Best Accessory For PS VR2: PS VR2 Sense Controller Charging Station

PlayStation VR2 Sense Controller Charging Station

If you pick up a PS VR2 headset, then you definitely want the charging station for the PS VR2 Sense controllers. The PS VR2 Sense controller charging station is a super convenient way to charge the controllers. Especially compared to plugging them in. Plus, it acts as a nice little way to display the controllers when they’re not in use.

At $49.99 it’s not too expensive either. And if you’re already spending the money on the headset, another $49.99 for added convenience is a worthy expense. Additionally, it doesn’t need to be connected to the PS5. It has its own power source, which means the PS VR2 Sense controllers can charge even if the PS5 is off. And that will be necessary if you never use the Rest Mode for the PS5. You can also use the charging stand for both controllers at the same time. Ensuring that both are fully charged when you’re ready to play again.

Best Accessory For Remote Play: PlayStation Portal

PlayStation Portal Deal

While this last accessory isn’t necessarily a must-have for everyone, it’s absolutely an accessory you want to consider adding to your collection of PS5 stuff. Mainly because it’s designed specifically for PS5 Remote Play. Yes, you can use Remote Play through the dedicated mobile app. However, it’s a much better experience on the PlayStation Portal. Why? For starters, it has a large 8-inch display.

The display is also situated between the two controller sides. This is a very comfortable design in terms of viewing your games on a smaller, mobile screen. Speaking of the controller, this is essentially a DualSense controller with a display attached. So you get full use of the DualSense features. Like the adaptive triggers and the advanced haptics. It supports other PS5 features too. Such as 3D audio. So you don’t lose out on that immersive sound quality when it comes to gaming.

Most importantly, the Remote Play seems to work better with this device than the mobile app. Perhaps because it was designed specifically for this purpose. Again, this isn’t an accessory we’d recommend to everyone. However, if you want the ability to play your PS5 games remotely sometimes, then this is a solid purchase.
