Best Of MWC 2025: Huawei Mate XT

Three display sizes in a single smartphone.

Huawei made an appearance at MWC 2025 and showed off its offerings. The device that attracted the most attention at MWC, unsurprisingly, was the Huawei Mate XT. That is the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, whose global variant was announced not long ago. MWC 2025 offered people a chance to check out the device, and many of them did, as we did last year. It was impressive back then, and it still is, especially now that it has a global software build on it. The Huawei Mate XT is the winner of one of our Best of MWC 2025 awards, that was a rather easy decision.

It’s quite compelling for a first-gen device

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, which is its full name, is actually quite compelling for a first-gen device. Yes, it’s a tri-fold, and that’s impressive on its own, but the way Huawei made it actually feels… very nice. It does not feel as first-gen products usually feel. Huawei has plenty of experience with foldables, and it managed to use that in order to bring this phone to life. It basically just expanded a regular foldable, but it managed to keep it manageably thin, which is a win. Yes, it’s notably heavier than regular book-style foldables, but still, based on our experience, it’s more than manageable. It’s a very interesting piece of technology.

This is a Z-fold type product, so it has only one display, and that display is exposed on more than one side when folded. That could be an issue for some of you. Those consumers who plan to buy this phone will probably be quite careful with it. Its price tag alone is immensely high, and this is definitely not a device to toss around. We do warn you, once you actually use it, and fully expand it, you may be hooked. Tri-fold devices sure are an interesting smartphone category, and the Mate XT opened it up for consumers… in style.

The Huawei Mate XT offers rather compelling specs

Despite the fact this is a tri-fold smartphone and the first of its kind, Huawei actually managed to include compelling specs on the inside. That actually includes a rather nice camera setup too. Three cameras sit on the back of this phone, led by a 50-megapixel main camera with a variable aperture. Huawei even included a periscope telephoto camera on the inside, which is nice to see. It also offers plenty of RAM at 16GB and the Kirin 9010 processor from the company.

This phone runs Huawei’s HarmonyOS skin, which is Android-based. It also offers you a chance to use three display sizes. When it’s fully folded, you get a 6.4-inch display. If you unfold it once, you’ll get a 7.9-inch panel. Unfolding all the way brings forth a 10.2-inch display. That display is also quite compelling on its own, and you do get a proper tablet experience once the Huawei Mate XT is fully unfolded.
