BBC IPlayer Is Finally Available For Google TV Streamer

The BBC iPlayer app is now officially available on Google TV Streamer, almost six months after the launch of the Android-powered streaming device.

As one of the pioneers of online streaming, the BBC iPlayer app offers UK license payers the ability to watch localized content live, on-demand, or even download for later viewing on selected hardware such as smartphones and tablets.

The BBC iPlayer app has been available on Android TV and Google TV for a number of years and often appeared in marketing and retail campaigns for streaming hardware. However, for an unknown reason, it was not available on the TV Streamer. Searching the on-device Play Store would only show alternative options like TVPlayer and Freeview. This is all despite the BBC iPlayer app gaining internal certification for the Google TV Streamer back in November 2024.

Over the past 24 hours, devices have started to gain BBC options within the “Channels” section of the TV Streamer interface. What;s more you can now download the iPlayer app directly from the on-device Google Play Store or initiate installation via your mobile phone.

Growing reports on Reddit also confirm this, but we have spotted it running on our own hardware overnight. As noted, the giveaway was the addition of BBC One and BBC Two to the Channels panel, which allows you to quickly jump into live streams from supported UK streaming platforms such as the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and more.

The addition of BBC iPlayer to the Google TV Streamer means that all of the big 3 terrestrial media platforms in the UK are now available on Google’s only available streaming device. With Chromecast no longer officially sold via the Google Store, this is an important “big” app and one of the biggest free streaming services on the planet.
