Summary: Atari has launched a new smartwatch for the ultimate fan of classic games. The Atari 2600 My Play Watch features classic Atari titles alongside various fitness tracking features and customization options. The watch is now available for pre-order and it launches later this Summer.
Atari has just announced a smartwatch called the Atari 2600 My Play Watch, and in addition to being a smartwatch with an Atari theme, it also plays actual games. Granted, it’s not like you’re playing today’s biggest hits, but you have to remember this is a smartwatch. A smartwatch that plays classic games. As you may have guessed, all of the available games come from the Atari 2600.
A fitting selection given the theme of the watch. The Atari 2600 My Play Watch has a full-color display that also does regular watch things, like tell the time. It even has fitness tracking. The watch may do more, but Atari only confirms three – active calorie burn, steps, and heart rate.
As smartwatches go, this new one from Atari definitely draws attention to itself. It boasts a custom crown and side button that evoke the style of the Atari 2600 console, and it even comes with a few different band options to swap out your style. Atari doesn’t mention what the battery life is like, but it is rechargeable and the watch comes with its own charging cable in the box.
The Atari 2600 My Play Watch can play four different Atari games
If you ever find yourself stuck somewhere and you’re bored with nothing to do, this watch can help cure that boredom with its collection of four classic games from the Atari 2600 era. The games installed on the watch are Missile Command, Centipede, Pong, and Super Breakout. You can play these games on the 2.02-inch TFT touch display or by using the crown and side button.
The watch also has customizable face elements you can apply and these are Atari-themed as well. To really tie things together, audio sounds for alarms, timers, and audio feedback are using original Atari 2600 sound effects. It’s perhaps the ultimate smartwatch for the ultimate Atari fan.
The watch is available for pre-order starting today
If you’re wondering what a smartwatch like this costs, would you guess a couple hundred bucks? Because if you thought Atari would be banking on tapping into your nostalgia to justify charging a price that high, you’d be wrong. The watch is retailing for $79.99 and it’s available for pre-order right now. That seems fairly reasonable given its pretty minimal smartwatch features. Atari says the watch will start shipping by June 10.
