Apple’s Rival To Samsung’s AR Glasses Is Reportedly In The Works

Apple announced its first mix-reality headset, the Vision Pro, in June 2023. Later, it was available for purchase in the United States in the first week of February 2024. We are already in 2025, but there’s no official announcement about any new product from the same segment. All we have is rumors. Thanks to popular Apple insider and Bloomberg reporter, Mark Gurman, we now have additional details about Apple’s long-rumored AR smart glasses.

Apple is continuously working on its AR smart glasses to compete with Samsung’s offering

In his latest Power ON newsletter, Gurman mentioned that Apple hasn’t stopped working on the long-rumored smart glasses. In fact, the company is working on microLED for its AR glasses in a secret display facility in Santa Clara, California.

Gurman further notes that Apple is also working on a new version of visionOS that will run the smart glasses. For those unaware, visionOS is an Apple-made operating system for the Vision Pro mixed reality headset. If you are waiting for Apple’s AR smart glasses, the wait could be very long.

Per the newsletter, Apple might take three or more years to get it ready. Apple reportedly delayed the launch of its AR glasses due to “technical challenges.” If everything had been on track, Apple would have already launched it. Anyway, that’s something for the future now.

Moving on, the company is also exploring other wearable products such as camera-equipped AirPods. Gurman initially reported on it in his newsletter back in mid-October last year. Moreover, Apple is also planning to launch a new device similar to the Vision Pro but with a cheaper price tag.

The Cupertino tech giant has no choice but to get the rumored product right

Let’s not forget that Samsung and Google are already working on AR glasses. The new devices will likely use Android XR, which is Google’s operating system for mixed-reality devices.

With two companies working together and with similar products already on the market, it’s quite a challenge for Apple to make its AR glasses right. Therefore, it’ll be interesting to see what new the company has to offer. Of course, everyone will keep an eye on the pricing given the Vision Pro blunder.
