Apple’s 2027 IPhone Might Be All Glass—What Could Go Wrong?

One thing we have to tip our hats off to Apple is its approach to the iPhone’s design. Out of all the smartphones out there, Apple’s iPhones typically have a refined and premium look. This approach is expected to continue in 2027. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims that for Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone, the company will use a “mostly glass, curved” design.

That being said, we are a little confused about Gurman’s report. Over the years, Apple’s approach to the iPhone’s design has typically incorporated a lot of glass. For instance, the cover of the phone’s display is made of glass. Then there is the back panel, which is also made of glass.

So, what does Gurman mean when he says the 2027 iPhone will be “mostly glass”? Could he mean that even the sides of the iPhone could be made of glass? Because, honestly, that would be pretty cool and interesting. As for talks about it sporting a curved design, in addition to the “mostly glass” rumors, The Verge cites one of Apple’s patents over the years that suggests an iPhone encased in glass that loops around the device.

More often than not, not all patents become actual products, so it’s hard to say that this one will either. However, given that it will be Apple’s 20th anniversary for one of its best-selling products ever, maybe the Cupertino company will go all out on this one. Gurman also suggests there won’t be display cutouts either.

iPhone with under-display cameras

This lines up with a report from The Information, which claims that at least one iPhone from the 2027 lineup will place the front-facing camera under the screen. Right now, Apple has a cutout for the front-facing camera and Face ID, which it’s calling “Dynamic Island”. This report suggests that Apple could finally hide the cameras properly this time, giving the iPhone a truly seamless look.

We’ve seen a number of Android phones that have adopted under-display cameras. However, the problem we’ve noticed so far is that the photos usually turn out less than stellar. Has Apple figured out a way around that problem? We’ll have to wait until 2027 to find out.

In the meantime, Apple will launch a new iPhone 17 Air model later this year. It is Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date. The company is also rumored to launch a foldable iPhone in 2026. Couple that with rumors of a new iPhone design in 2027, it looks like the next few iPhone cycles will be pretty interesting.
