Android 16 Could Finally Offer An Enhanced Desktop Mode

Google seems to be bringing an enhanced desktop mode with the Android 16 update. The new iteration of the OS will make it easier for users to use an external display with their Android smartphones. According to Android Authority, Google is working on new features to manage external displays with Android phones. Notably, these new tools may further push Android to transform from a mobile OS into a proper desktop interface.
Google is experimenting with a Samsung DeX-like desktop mode in Android 16 beta
As per the source, Google is testing a Samsung DeX-like desktop mode for more Android phones in the latest Android 16 beta 2.1 update. The DeX functionality allows Samsung flagship phones to trigger a desktop-like experience on external monitors. Although the Android 16 beta 2.1 release doesn’t automatically activate the enhanced desktop features, Android developer Mishaal Rahman has successfully enabled them manually with some effort.
Rahman enabled two features that ease external display management with Android phones. The first one lets users run the mouse cursor between the display and the Android phone. He also posted a video showing that Android 16 may allow users to move the cursor freely between screens without limitations. This could let you use your phone with an external monitor just like a personal computer.
Google could make external display management better in Android 16
Currently, when you connect the latest Google Pixel phones to an external display, you can mirror the screen. However, by tweaking some developer options, you can extend the screen in Android 16’s beta 2.1 release. The source further showed a “mirror built-in display” toggle to switch between mirroring and extending your phone’s screen.
Furthermore, you may eventually be able to adjust the size of the text and icons on the external display. Besides, you can control the refresh rate of the screen. As of now, it’s not clear if Android 16’s first public build will bring these enhanced desktop features.
There’s a possibility that Google may be keeping the new external display management functionalities for one of the first quarterly releases of Android 16. We can only wait to find out more.
