AirPods Owners: Several New Features Are Coming Your Way Soon

Apple is all set to host its latest WWDC from June 9th to June 13th. During the conference, the Cupertino tech giant will introduce iOS 19 or iOS 26, iPadOS 19, macOS 16, watchOS 12, tvOS 19, and visionOS 3. The company will not announce any new hardware during the event, as per the rumors. However, a report by 9to5Mac claims that Apple will introduce five previously unreported free features for the earlier AirPods at WWDC 2025.

These functionalities will enhance the overall user experience across Apple’s audio accessories range. As per the source, the company will introduce new head gestures, sleep detection, camera control, audio mix, and improve the pairing experience in shared iPad functionalities for the existing AirPods at the WWDC 2025 event.

AirPods could get new head gestures and sleep detection features at WWDC 2025

As per the source, Apple will introduce new head gestures for the AirPods at the upcoming WWDC 2025. These will include a Conversation Awareness volume adjustment feature “before returning users to their original noise-control settings.” As of now, you can end a Conversation Awareness volume adjustment by pressing and holding the device’s stem or swiping up on the stem, but a head gesture will make things easier.

Furthermore, the company will release sleep detection functionality for the AirPods. Once a user has fallen asleep while using their AirPods, this feature will automatically pause the music or podcast playback. Unfortunately, there’s no confirmation if it will be a standalone feature on the AirPods or if it will use the Apple Watch to learn if the user has fallen asleep.

Camera control, audio mix, and improved pairing features are also coming

The report claims that Apple will finally let AirPods users launch the iPhone or iPad camera with a tap on the stem. Apple could also offer the Audio Mix feature, introduced with the iPhone 16, for the AirPods. The source claims that the company has been developing a similar “studio quality” mic mode for AirPods, “turning them into a strong competitor in the creator lav mic market.”

Last but not least, Apple will reportedly offer improved classroom support for the AirPods. The feature will make it easier to have multiple AirPods connecting to the same iPad by reducing some of the delay in the current pairing system.

There’s a possibility that Apple may choose to delay or change some of the aforementioned features, but we will find out soon enough next Monday when WWDC 2025 kicks off.
