Quick question: how many of you pay close attention to the quality of your phone call? As long as the voices come in clearly and the call doesn’t drop, that is probably good enough for most. Samsung and the GSMA have partnered to enable VoLTE calls by default on devices running Android 15 or later.
According to the announcement, “Working in alignment with the GSMA’s Network Settings Exchange (NSX) and Interoperability Testing services, Samsung is helping to enable consistent and reliable voice services across a wide range of operators and regions by default. All Samsung devices using Android 15 or above, including the recently launched Galaxy S25 series, are being equipped to access high-quality VoLTE where supported, using operator-defined IMS settings via NSX or defaulting to GSMA Profile #4 when necessary.”
Keep in mind that this is just Samsung’s partnership with the GSMA. If you happen to own a smartphone made by another brand, you’ll have to enable VoLTE yourself. It’s not a big deal. You should be able to find the toggle in your phone’s network/connection settings. It’s 2025, and since most carriers are phasing out 2G and 3G voice services, there’s a good chance your phone already has VoLTE enabled by default—so you probably don’t need to lift a finger.
What is VoLTE, and why does it matter?
But for those wondering what the big deal is, Samsung enabling VoLTE by default is an upgrade over regular voice calls. Traditionally, voice calls are made over 2G or 3G networks. However, VoLTE makes calls over an LTE network. Your phone breaks your voice into small data packets and sends them over the network more efficiently. This in turn allows calls to come through much more clearly.
If you’ve ever had a call that sounded exceptionally clear, there’s a good chance you have VoLTE to thank for that. Also, VoLTE calls mean that you can surf the web and use data while on a call. In the past, calls made over 2G or 3G meant that you couldn’t use data. This is troublesome if you’re on a call and are trying to use Google Maps at the same time.
