VisionOS 3 Will Be A ‘feature-Packed’ Update, Despite Lackluster Sales

There’s no denying that Apple’s Vision Pro is a technological marvel. It has almost everything you would want from such a device. The only problem is its ecosystem and its price tag. However, a software update could make it more appealing. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, his latest Power On newsletter claims that the visionOS 3 update is going to be “feature-packed”.

According to Gurman, his sources told him that the visionOS 3 update will be “feature-packed.” We can only speculate what he means, as Gurman does not provide any details. However, Gurman’s statements suggest that Apple is desperately trying to find ways to make the Vision Pro more appealing to customers through software updates.

“Apple is essentially going back to the drawing board in this category. All signs are pointing to the company’s Vision Products Group shifting its resources to other form factors. But Apple can’t just let the Vision Pro die out. It has invested too much and needs to keep churning out the device’s visionOS updates (the third edition will be a pretty feature-packed release, I’m told).”

Apple is also reportedly exploring other form factors. Gurman writes, “The Vision Pro headset, despite being a technical marvel, is clearly a commercial flop. Apple realizes that it’s not worth continuing to invest in this approach — unless it’s just to increase the device’s specifications or reduce the cost and weight. So attention has shifted to figuring out a more appealing form factor.”

No Vision Pro this year

The journalist says that Apple won’t refresh the Vision Pro this year. The headset, powered by the M2 chipset, will fall about four generations behind Apple’s other Apple Silicon devices by the time it receives an update. Does this indicate that it has been cancelled? There were reports last year suggesting that Apple may cancel production. Gurman’s comments are a bit vague. He says Apple has come up with a “future version” of the Vision Pro. However, we’re not sure if Apple will keep the same design or come up with something new entirely.

We have heard rumors that Apple was exploring the idea of smart glasses, but later scrapped those plans. Either way, Apple will share more about the visionOS update at WWDC 2025 towards the middle of the year, so we should have the details then.
