YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has revealed that the streaming platform’s daily viewership on TV has surpassed its smartphone counterpart. YouTube has completely disrupted the TV ecosystem. Mohan shared it as one of the many insights in his latest blog post dubbed “Our Big Bets for 2025.”
Americans are now streaming YouTube on their TVs more than on their smartphones
Mohan has revealed that YouTube’s daily viewership on TV has now surpassed one billion hours, outdoing consumption on mobile devices. Notably, the change in viewing habits of users highlights the evolution of content consumption and growing preference for larger screens. Mohan’s blog post also suggests that YouTube has been the most popular streaming platform in the US for the last two years.
“For more and more people, watching TV means watching YouTube. Viewers are watching, on average, over 1B hours of YouTube content on TVs daily, and TV is now the primary device for YouTube viewing in the US,” YouTube CEO Neal Mohan wrote in a blog post.
“But the ‘new’ television doesn’t look like the ‘old’ television. It’s interactive and includes things like Shorts (yes, people watch them on TVs), podcasts, and live streams, right alongside the sports, sitcoms, and talk shows people already love,” Mohan added further.
YouTube is now the most popular service for listening to podcasts in the US
YouTube is also the favorite platform for listening to podcasts in the US, reveals the CEO’s blog post. The video platform has long invested in the podcast experience, and content creators have found that video format makes podcasts even more compelling. This year, the company will introduce more tools that will improve monetization for podcast creators and make it even easier to discover new podcasts. Mohan stressed that today’s TV experience is more interactive with Shorts, podcasts, and live streams sitting alongside traditional content like sports and talk shows.
