This Find My Device Tracker For Android Will Have An E-Ink Display, If It Ships

Google’s Find My Device network hasn’t seen much in terms of new hardware, but a clever new tracker, the “PhotoTag,” is on its way with a built-in e-ink display and more.

So far only two brands have been selling Find My Device trackers for Android users. Chipolo offers item/keychain and wallet trackers while Pebblebee has keychain, item, and wallet trackers available. The latter is also soon launching trackers that are built into larger items such as bicycles and more.

There’s one other launch on the horizon, but a clever new option has also now surfaced.

The “PhotoTag” is an item tracker that promises to work with both iOS Find My and Android Find My Device networks when it launches, and its key feature is a color e-ink display that can show additional information. The display is customizable to show contact details, a QR code, and more, as well as just showing a picture of the user’s choosing when the device is in a static state. A red “Contact” button changes the screen to show additional details.

It’s a clever idea, especially in the context of a luggage tag or backpack attachment. The “PhotoTag” is also advertised as a good option for a pet tracker, though it does seem a little large for that particular use case.

The “PhotoTag” is claimed to offer around 10 months of battery life on a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. It also features a metal frame and IP65 dust/water resistance.

The catch?

For now, the “PhotoTag” is only available via Kickstarter, and there’s not much of a track record at play here. This would be the first product from the company, and there are a couple of red flags at play. For one, there’s been no real push for this product outside of social media advertising, and some of the marketing materials are a little questionable. The Kickstater page says the color e-ink display only supports four colors, but the images throughout the page are much more detailed and vivid than that would suggest.

If this product does manage to cross the finish line, though, it looks solid. “PhotoTag” has blown past its $5,000 funding goal with around $143k raised thus far. Orders are said to ship as soon as April with an “early bird” discount getting a tracker for just $29, down from the future retail price of $59.

What do you think of “PhotoTag” and the idea of a tracker with a display?
