Google seems determined to help you learn a new language. To achieve this, the company is using all its accumulated expertise in artificial intelligence. Google has announced a series of Gemini-powered experimental features called “Little Language Lessons.” These are three experiments that can enhance and boost your language learning experience.
By now, it’s no secret that Google is using AI for practically everything. The Mountain View giant not only offers mass-market products but also experimental features through “Labs.” These experiences are designed to show off small bits of what the company’s technology is capable of. However, because they are experimental, they often fail to make it into final products. But there are cases where they become so popular that they become feature-rich final products—like NotebookLM.
Google announces “Little Language Experiments” to enhance your language learning experience
Recent findings suggest that Google is working on a language practice feature for its Translate service. However, the company isn’t settling with this and has announced “Little Language Experiments.” The company says that Little Language Experiments is the result of engineers’ experimentation with the Gemini API.
Tiny Lesson is the first experimental feature in the suite. It’s designed to generate useful vocabulary—including words, phrases, and grammar tips—related to a situation described by the user. It’s ideal for knowing how to express a specific idea or for those moments when your head goes blank. You could use the phrase “ask for directions,” and the AI will tell you multiple ways to express it in a specific language.
Then there’s Slang Hang, a tool designed to make your conversations more natural. When learning a language, it’s inevitable that you’ll sound too formal or robotic at first. Interacting with people who speak that language and adapting to their speech patterns can naturally resolve this issue. However, you don’t always have the opportunity to interact with native speakers of the language you’re learning. Slang Hang generates realistic conversations using terms and words commonly used in everyday life. The feature also allows you to learn the literal meaning of the terms.
Lastly, Word Cam will use your phone’s camera to enhance your language learning. You can take a photo of a specific object or item. Gemini will then generate words and phrases that you can use to describe it in a specific language.
