Summary

  • The Google app has a new icon on iOS.
  • This app icon shows off a new design for Google’s compact ‘G’ logo.
  • It’s currently unclear whether the new G logo will be used elsewhere.

The well-worn Google G logo is getting an update — at least on iOS. As spotted by u/Eyal-M on Reddit, the iOS version of the Google app now has a new app icon featuring a version of Google’s G lettermark that we haven’t seen before.

The new version of the Google “G” replaces the existing iteration’s clearly defined red, yellow, green, and blue color blocks with colors that blur into each other. The colors have also been tweaked slightly from the version we’re used to: the red, green, and yellow segments are a touch brighter, while the blue portion is more saturated than before.

The new blended-color icon brings to mind AI tools, which have frequently included color gradients in their marketing imagery. Gemini in particular leans into its trademark blue-purple-red gradient in its app icon, its wordmark, and software design elements. This new look for Google’s G is likely meant to help users associate the Google app with AI functionality — or at the very least, to make more of the Google ecosystem aesthetically consistent with Gemini’s design language and marketing.

Available now on iOS — coming soon elsewhere?

Google’s current wordmark logo and the multicolored G icon it uses as a compact version debuted nearly a decade ago, in September 2015. This new tweaked version is visible now on iOS and Google’s App Store listing.

As far as we can tell, the updated iOS app icon is the first time Google has used this new compact logo. It’s unclear when or if we’ll get it on other platforms, but I’d be surprised to see Google roll out a new logo solely for one app on one operating system. I expect we’ll be seeing this new version in more places in the near future. I’ve reached out to Google for comment and I’ll update this story when and if I hear back.
