Samsung just held its latest Galaxy Unpacked event, and we’re still winding down. Of course, Samsung put a heavy emphasis on AI. One of the more interesting announcements had to do with Gemini. According to the company, some of the features present in Project Astra will make it over to the Galaxy S25 phones first.

Google I/O 2024 was pretty much full to the brim with AI stuff, but one of the announcements that stood out was Project Astra. This basically gives Gemini a set of eyes to see the world. You’ll point your phone at something in the real world, and you’ll be able to ask questions about it.
Not only will you be able to ask for information about it, you’ll also be able to ask it to produce content about it. Imagine pointing your phone’s camera at a tree and asking Gemini to write a poem about it.
Since then, Project Astra has been this far-off dream for tech enthusiasts. However, during Galaxy Unpacked, we got word that Google will bring two Project Astra features over to the Galaxy S25 phones. These features are Screen Share and Live Video.
The first feature will give Gemini a live view of what’s on your screen. Think of it as the final form of Google Now On Tap. Gemini will read your screen in real time, and you’ll be able to have a conversation about what’s on it.
Samsung gave us an example of the Screen share feature by having Gemini answer questions about a pair of pants on a website. The voice read the size chart, understood the information on it, but also gathered that the pants have a relaxed fit based on the information on the page. It then advised the user to choose a smaller size for a more fitted look.
That’s impressive enough, but what people reacted to the most was using the Live Video feature. You’ll be able to have a conversation about the world around you just by pointing your camera at it. In the example, Gemini was giving a child advice on kneading dough.
When to expect this
We’d expect this feature to launch with the phone, but that might not be the thing. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, mentioned that people will be able to use these features “in the coming months”. So, it looks like Google is still ironing out the kinks before putting it on the market. It’s a bit disappointing to have to wait, but we’re sure that it will be worth it.
This feature will be exclusive to Galaxy S25 phones at first. It won’t be exclusive for too long, as the Google Pixel 10 phones are likely to ship with them. After that, there’s no telling when this feature will make it to other devices. Remember, it took more than half a year for Circle to Search to make it to other devices.
