Samsung’s Mobile Chief Has A New (And Important) Role

Summary: Samsung is undergoing significant structural changes, one of which was forced by the sudden passing of JH Han last week. TM Roh, Samsung’s mobile chief, will take over from JH Han on an interim basis. Samsung has also made other changes to try to boost the company’s performance.

Samsung is in the midst of a difficult financial situation. The company isn’t closing, but stock prices are stagnant, and angry shareholders want answers. Company executives have already apologized to shareholders and promised changes. However, a tragedy forced one of the most significant role changes, that of TM Roh—Samsung’s current mobile chief.

TM Roh, Samsung’s mobile chief, is now also acting head of Samsung DX

Last week, Han Jong-hee (also known as JH Han), a top executive at the company, died of a heart attack at the age of 63. JH Han was co-CEO of Samsung and head of Samsung DX (Device eXperience). The latter is the firm’s Devices and Digital Appliances division—which also includes its TVs. The unexpected news created a leadership void that the company needed to fill quickly with a new appointment.

Now, Samsung has confirmed that TM Roh, current head of Samsung MX (Samsung’s mobile device division, formerly known as Samsung Mobile), will also serve as interim director of Samsung DX, replacing JH Han. TM Roh will oversee the Quality Innovation Committee as well. This is a group created last year to quickly track and address potential quality control issues in the company’s products.

Other changes

With this appointment, Samsung aims to avoid instability within the organization. It’s worth noting that the company has made other changes to the company’s structure. Choi Won, Development Director and Global Operations Team Leader at Samsung DX and Samsung MX, will now serve as COO of both branches. Choi Won has extensive experience in the mobile market after working with Qualcomm.

Recently, Kim Cheol-gi, Director of the Strategic Marketing Office at Samsung MX, also has a new role. The executive has been promoted to Director of Samsung’s Digital Appliances (DA) business. He is expected to help improve the company’s performance in the home appliances segment, where financial results for 2024 were not as good as expected.
