Report: Samsung’s Take On A ‘tri-Fold’ Foldable To Have Two Separate Displays, Coming Alongside Fold 7

Samsung is reportedly planning on debuting its tri-fold Galaxy device alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The company is taking a different approach to the “tri-fold” device than we’ve seen from the like of Huawei, with seemingly twice the number of displays, and Samsung’s might be a better option.

It’s not unrealistic to say that the reason foldable phones are as popular as they are is that Samsung pushed so hard to make them become a reality. It’s a combination effort from the market as a whole, with Oppo, Samsung, Google, and others pushing for better, more reliable foldable phones, but the company played a large part.

According to new reports, Samsung is going to try and push that corner of the market further with a tri-fiold Galaxy device that will launch alongside the expected Galaxy Z Fold 7 (via ETNews). Where the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has an outer screen and an inner screen joined by a single hinge, the new tri-fold phone is said to house two hinges. This design is apparently very similar to the Flex G prototype displayed by Samsung at CES.

As we understand it, the device will have two hinges on either side of the main external display. That outer display will be the same size as what we’re used to on a Z Fold device — somewhere around 6.49 inches across. The device can then be opened like a letter, with a third of the device folding out at a time. Doing so would reveal a large 9.96-inch internal display that rivals a tablet.

This comes as Huawei is kicking off its Mate XT release, which is presented as a device that can be opened in several steps, allowing for three different viewing modes. The Mate XT and Samsung tri-fold will seemingly offer much different experiences, and it seems the Galaxy foldable will be better becuase it might not leave the internal display exposed around the fold as the Mate XT does. Still, the Mate XT doesn’t need two displays becuase of how it’s been engineered.

Little more information is available on the tri-fold release from Samsung. Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 7, there have not been many leaks, which means Samsung is hiding its hand much closer to the chest. It’s possible the device could be delayed further, but it might be announced at the same time the Fold 7 is.
