Perplexity & Deutsche Telekom To Announce ‘AI Phone’ This Year

Perplexity has successfully established itself as one of the biggest names in the artificial intelligence segment. The company made huge leaps forward this year with the launch of its Android app and free Deep Research tool. Now, Perplexity is working with Deutsche Telekom (DT) to launch an “AI Phone.”

Deutsche Telekom is a giant in the telecom industry. It’s the parent company of T-Mobile, to give you an idea. They also have a big presence in Europe. During the MWC 2025 show in Barcelona, the mobile carrier announced the development of a smartphone that’s packed with AI services. The company will reveal more details about the device during the second half of the year. For now, we only know that it will initially target the European market and have a price under $1,000.

An “AI phone” with Perplexity tech will be announced this year

Perplexity appears to be playing a key role in the development of the device. It’s possible that the company will integrate its assistant natively into the DT’s AI phone OS. However, it’s still too early to tell if it will be the default assistant or if Google will also compete for that spot with Gemini.

Claudia Nemat, a Deutsche Telekom board member, said that the phone will offer “AI on your lock screen” and that users will be able to experience “the full Monty” thanks to the work with Perplexity. Therefore, it appears that the AI startup has the advantage of having its software prominently featured on the device. Still, the DT’s AI phone will also integrate AI-powered services from Google Cloud, ElevenLabs, and Picsart. Plus, Deutsche Telekom subscribers will be able to download the Magenta AI assistant if they want.

Perplexity is transitioning from just being an answer machine to an action machine,” said Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity’s co-founder and CEO. “It’s going to start doing things for you, not just answering questions. It’s going to be able to book flights for you, book reservations for you, send emails for you, send messages, place phone calls for you, and all those sorts of things, like set smart reminders,” he added.

Available in 2026

While we will know more about the phone during H2 2025, it will go on sale in 2026. Hopefully, more news will emerge on that soon. This is not the first time Perplexity has struck a smartphone-related deal. The Nothing Phone (2a) includes a one-year subscription for early buyers. However, the AI platform’s mobile app did not yet exist at that time.
