In early 2024, OpenAI announced Sora as its first AI-powered text-to-video generator. ChatGPT’s parent company took its time releasing a stable version in December 2024. Now, OpenAI has revealed that they plan to integrate Sora’s video generator capabilities into ChatGPT.
There has been a lot of buzz around the company’s video generation tool lately. This week, OpenAI expanded Sora’s availability to the UK and countries in the EU bloc. The next step appears to be the integration of the model into OpenAI’s flagship product.
ChatGPT will receive AI-powered video generation capabilities thanks to OpenAI’s Sora model
Rohan Sahai, OpenAI’s product lead for Sora, said that the company is working on allowing ChatGPT users to access Sora’s capabilities without leaving the chatbot. This will make ChatGPT even more useful, potentially encouraging even more people to jump on the AI bandwagon and even sign up for paid plans. Sora currently can generate video clips of up to 20 seconds, and paid plans could raise this limit, for example.
The firm initially promoted Sora as a tool especially targeted at creatives and production studios. However, now the company wants to make it attractive to the general public. That said, you may still need to access the web app to use all the features even after the integration. Sahai said that the capabilities available from ChatGPT could have fewer control options. Anyway, just being able to quickly generate video clips with a prompt will be a welcome addition.
Sora’s web app allows for things like editing and joining different video sequences and clips. Perhaps the integration with ChatGPT will focus primarily on video generation and nothing more. OpenAI has sought to make its chatbot accessible and simple to use. In fact, Sahai said that they kept Sora as a separate product from ChatGPT to avoid complicating things for people.
Mobile app teased; Sora-powered image generation is on the table
Sahai revealed a couple of other interesting things related to Sora. First, the company has the idea of developing a mobile app that could further expand the reach of the service. The executive even confirmed that they are looking for mobile engineers to start the project. Plus, OpenAI wants the Sora AI model to be both a video and an image generator. Currently, ChatGPT can generate images powered by the DALL-E 3 model. However, the Sora AI model could take the photorealism of the generated images to a new level.
Recently, Sora Turbo, the model that powers the Sora web app, already has a new version in development. There is no ETA yet for the arrival of the improved Sora or the integration with ChatGPT. The mobile app will probably take some time to arrive since it is in the very early stages. Hopefully more related news will emerge soon.
